Integrated bio- and carbon-isotope stratigraphy of the Upper Cretaceous Gurpi Formation (Iran): A new reference for the eastern Tethys and its implic…
2018
29 pages; International audience; A high-resolution stratigraphic analysis of the Upper Cretaceous Gurpi Formation has been undertaken in the Shahneshin section (Zagros Basin, Iran). New results on calcareous nannofossils, planktic foraminifers, dinoflagellate cysts and high-resolution carbon and oxygen stable isotopes form the basis of a reference section for the eastern Tethys that spans the upper Coniacian to the late Danian. Carbon-isotope correlation to Gubbio, Italy and the NW German chalk allows for the identification of many isotopic events as well as for the definition of new events in the Campanian and Maastrichtian. Our results allow for a review of the accurate position of the C…
Driving factors of dinoflagellate cyst distribution in surface sediments of aMediterranean lagoon with limited access to the sea
2016
International audience; Seasonal distribution of dinoflagellate cysts were studied at five surface sediment study stations in Ghar El MelhLagoon (GML) (Tunisia) in relation to physicochemical parameters and phytoplankton abundance in the watercolumn. At least sixteen dinocyst types were identified, dominated mainly by Protoperidinium spp., Scrippsiellatrochoidea complex, Lingulodinum machaerophorum, Alexandrium spp. and Gymnodinium spp., along with manyround brown cysts. Cyst abundance ranged from 0 to 229 g−1 dry sediment. No significant differences in cyst distributionwere found among stations, though a significant variation was observed among seasons with cyst dominancein autumn. No sign…
SLC20A1 Is Involved in Urinary Tract and Urorectal Development
2020
Previous studies in developing Xenopus and zebrafish reported that the phosphate transporter slc20a1a is expressed in pronephric kidneys. The recent identification of SLC20A1 as a monoallelic candidate gene for cloacal exstrophy further suggests its involvement in the urinary tract and urorectal development. However, little is known of the functional role of SLC20A1 in urinary tract development. Here, we investigated this using morpholino oligonucleotide knockdown of the zebrafish ortholog slc20a1a. This caused kidney cysts and malformations of the cloaca. Moreover, in morphants we demonstrated dysfunctional voiding and hindgut opening defects mimicking imperforate anus in human cloacal exs…
Retinal homeobox promotes cell growth, proliferation and survival of mushroom body neuroblasts in the Drosophila brain.
2016
Abstract The Drosophila mushroom bodies, centers of olfactory learning and memory in the fly ‘forebrain’, develop from a set of neural stem cells (neuroblasts) that generate a large number of Kenyon cells (KCs) during sustained cell divisions from embryonic to late pupal stage. We show that retinal homeobox ( rx ), encoding for an evolutionarily conserved transcription factor, is required for proper development of the mushroom bodies. Throughout development rx is expressed in mushroom body neuroblasts (MBNBs), their ganglion mother cells (MB-GMCs) and young KCs. In the absence of rx function, MBNBs form correctly but exhibit a reduction in cell size and mitotic activity, whereas overexpress…

Giant pseudocyst of the abdominal wall following incisional ventral hernia repair: an extremely rare clinical entity. Report of a case
2021
A survey of pathology specimens associated with impacted teeth over a 21-year period
2019
Background To compare the histologic diagnosis of lesions associated with impacted teeth from a South African population with literature data. Material and Methods A retrospective cross-sectional survey of tissue specimens associated with impacted teeth that were analyzed in the Department of Oral Pathology (University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa) between 1996 and 2016. Patient age, gender, impacted tooth location and the histologic diagnosis were recorded for statistical analysis. Results Odontogenic pathology was diagnosed in 389 (95.6%) specimens while dental follicle comprised 4.4% of tissue submissions. The mean age was 25.3 ±15.2 years with a male predilection (M:F=1.8:1). The …
Retrospective clinicopathological study of 418 odontogenic cysts
2010
Objectives: To determine the relative incidence of odontogenic cysts and to identify the main clinicopathological features among patients treated in the Oral Surgery Department of the Dental Clinic of the University of Barcelona (Spain). Study design: A retrospective observational study was made of 418 odontogenic cysts diagnosed in 380 patients included in the database of 1235 histopathological diagnoses. The subjects were treated in the Master degree program of Oral Surgery and Implantology of the University of Barcelona in the period 1997-2006. The following variables were recorded: gender, age, clinical characteristics of the lesions (size and location), radiological features, duration,…
Three-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography for diagnosis of keratocystic odontogenic tumours; evaluation of four cases.
2011
The keratocystic odontogenic tumour (KCOT), formerly known as the odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is a benign intraosseous lesion that derives from remnants of the dental lamina. Due to its characteristics, clinical and histopathological features and various treatment approaches, this pathology is different comparing with other odontogenic cysts. Radiographically the KCOT appears as well-defined unilocular or multilocular radiolucency with thin radiopaque borders. In most cases, conventional radiographic imaging, such as panoramic views and intraoral periapical films, are adequate to determine the location and estimate the size of an KCOT. However, the clinical use for cone-beam computed tomog…
Endoscopic Neurosurgery and Endoscope-assisted Microneurosurgery for the Treatment of Intracranial Cysts
1998
Objective Different endoscopic techniques have been introduced into neurosurgery, but accepted terminology and definitions are still missing. We propose a terminology based on whether the endoscope is used alone or in conjunction with an operating microscope and on whether the route of surgical manipulations is through or outside the endoscope. Accordingly, procedures are categorized into endoscopic neurosurgery (EN), endoscope-assisted microneurosurgery (EAM), and endoscope-controlled microneurosurgery (ECM). Methods We treated 36 patients with intracranial arachnoid cysts (ACs) and intraventricular cysts endoscopically. The patients ranged in age from 4 months to 69 years (mean age, 31 yr…
